Before You Start: Tools & Preparation

Gather these tools and verify your equipment before breaking ground:

  • Spirit level, measuring tape, marking paint
  • Shovel, concrete mixer (for foundations)
  • Crane or lift truck (for poles over 5m)
  • Wrench set, socket set, torque wrench
  • Multi-meter (for testing)
  • Safety gear: helmets, gloves, safety vests, traffic cones
Safety Warning: Never attempt to raise a pole manually if it exceeds 5m or 80kg. Always use proper lifting equipment and ensure the work area is cordoned off from traffic.

Site Survey & Pole Spacing

Before digging, mark all pole locations carefully. Key spacing guidelines:

  • Standard spacing: 3.0-3.5 times the pole height. For a 6m pole, space at 18-21m intervals.
  • Ensure no obstructions: Check that solar panels won't be shaded by buildings, trees, or billboards — especially during winter when the sun is lower.
  • Check ground conditions: Sandy soil needs wider foundations. Rocky ground may need specialized drilling equipment.

Foundation Preparation

The foundation is the most critical step for long-term stability:

  • Dig foundation pit: 60cm x 60cm x 80cm deep for a 6m pole (scale up for taller poles)
  • Install anchor bolts using a template to ensure precise spacing
  • Pour C25 concrete, vibrating to remove air pockets
  • Keep bolts 5-8cm above concrete surface for pole flange attachment
  • Cure time: 5-7 days minimum before mounting the pole. Do not rush this step.

Assemble the Light on the Pole

Assemble while the pole is still on the ground — much safer and easier:

  • Attach the solar street light bracket to the pole top using the provided bolts
  • Torque all bolts to manufacturer specifications (typically 40-60 Nm for M12 bolts)
  • Double-check that the light fixture is securely fastened — vibration during lifting can loosen loose bolts

Raise the Pole

  • Use a crane or lift truck. Position the pole base near the foundation.
  • Slowly raise the pole to vertical position
  • Align the pole flange holes with the anchor bolts
  • Hand-tighten all nuts first, then torque in a cross pattern to specification
  • Check vertical alignment with a spirit level on two perpendicular sides. Adjust with shims if needed.

Panel Orientation & Angle Adjustment

Correct orientation is crucial for energy generation:

  • Northern hemisphere: Panel faces TRUE SOUTH (not magnetic south)
  • Southern hemisphere: Panel faces TRUE NORTH
  • Tilt angle: Set to your latitude + 10-15 degrees. For most tropical regions, 15-30 degrees works well.
  • Tighten all tilt adjustment bolts securely — wind can shift loose panels

Power On & Test

  • Locate the power button (usually on the bottom or side of the fixture)
  • Press and hold for 3-5 seconds until the indicator light flashes
  • The light should automatically turn on at dusk and off at dawn (test by covering the solar panel to simulate darkness)
  • Verify: light illuminates at expected brightness, all LED modules are working, no flickering
  • Record the installation date, GPS coordinates, and pole number for maintenance tracking

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Rushing foundation curing: Concrete needs 7 days to reach full strength. Installing too early causes leaning poles.
  • Wrong panel orientation: Even a 30-degree error can reduce energy generation by 20%+.
  • Ignoring shade: A single tree branch casting a shadow on the panel between 10 AM and 2 PM can cut output by 50%+.
  • Overtightening bolts: Stripped threads are a costly repair. Use a torque wrench.
  • No documentation: Without installation records, maintenance teams can't efficiently troubleshoot issues later.
